Principal’s Report at the 34th Annual Speech Day 2/12/2016

Guest of Honour Professor CHAN, Supervisor Ms. LAM, School Managers, Distinguished Guests, Parents, Teachers and Students, Good afternoon.

It is our great honour to have Professor CHAN to officiate here at our celebrations today. This year we have 15 graduates admitted to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and now they are Professor CHAN’s students.

The Education Theme for the year 2015-2016 was “In Pursuit of Greater Knowledge, Stronger Character and Fellowship”. Our staff have worked very hard to enhance students’ learning, build a caring school environment and promote the holistic development of students. We would like to show our gratitude to the Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club for their generous donations of $220,000 for installing the new VRF air-conditioning system in classrooms on the first four floors in 2015 and the subsidies for teachers and needy students’ expenses on study tours.

In our curriculum, we continued to provide step-up school-based programmes for high achievers in senior forms. Expanded support programmes were arranged for low achievers in junior forms. Group teaching strategy was adopted in teaching the four core subjects from S4 to S6. The Career Life Planning Grant was fully utilized to deepen students’ self-understanding, finance their participation in career exploration and foster their personal development and life planning. In line with our school’s good tradition, students were encouraged to participate in various school and community services. Students had their horizons broadened and valuable experiences gained through study tours to Qianhai, Seoul, Vietnam, Tainan and Beijing.

During the past academic year, workshops with themes on ‘Life Planning’, ‘Supporting Students with ADHD and ASD’, ‘Self-directed Learning’ and ‘Body Mind Soul Health Care’ were held on staff development days.
In the year under review, we have set a slogan NOVA which stands for New Opportunities Visionary Achievements for the school redevelopment project. As the government subvention is not sufficient to finance the whole project, extra capital is needed. Fundraising events, such as walkathons and concerts, had been and will continue to be held. We would like to express our gratitude to all the donors for their generosity in the redevelopment project.

In the 2016 HKDSE examination, of the 13 subjects taken, the average subject pass rate of 169 Secondary 6 students was 99.5%. 86.4% students attained the minimum University admission requirement of ‘33222’. The highest level 4+ subject was Mathematics M2 at 87.0%. Chinese History and English Language followed and they reached 86.4%. 92% of our S6 graduates were admitted to local, overseas universities and other tertiary institutions. Some of them were admitted to competitive local programmes like Medicine, Dental Surgery, Law, Global Business and Quantitative Finance.

Our students actively participated in various inter-school competitions and the results were also pleasing. We won more than 470 individual and group prizes in the last academic year.
Seven of our students LAM Hiu Wing (6A), WONG Lee Kuen (6E), CHAN Ho Hin (5D), CHUNG Hiu Ting (5B), HO Wing Ka Tiona (5B), HONG Tsz Ki (5D) and LAM Wing Yin (5B) were honoured with the 2015-2016 Ten Outstanding Youths of the Eastern District Award. NG Kai Yung (3B) received the top ten Outstanding Student Award in the Junior Section organized by the Hong Kong Island Head Association. A group of three S4 students and three S2 students won the First Honour Prize both in the Senior and Junior Division of the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2015 Competition. A team of six students won the championship and Best Presenter Award in the Sand Sculpture Competition held by the CYC of the Hong Kong Eastern District Committee.

You may refer to the 2015-2016 Annual Report and the Speech Day Bulletin for a more complete picture of our students’ achievements in Mathematics, Science, the Speech Festival, the Music Festival, public speaking, Chinese essay writing and athletic competitions.

We would like to thank all who helped us achieve our educational goals. To live up to our school motto “Knowledge and Perseverance”, various kinds of resources will be utilized to inculcate students’ life values, nurture their growth and enhance their learning. Lastly, we hope our school redevelopment project can proceed according to schedule so as to provide students with a more favourable learning environment in the future.

Thank you!
