Principal’s Report at the 27th Annual Speech Day – 4/12/2009

Guest of Honour Professor Tong, Supervisor Mrs. LAU, School Managers, Distinguished Guests, Parents, Teachers and Students,

The school year under review, 2008-2009 has been a truly splendid and memorable one.  The Education Theme was “Building on tradition, we reach for new heights”.  We managed not only to cope with the preparation of the New Senior Secondary (NSS) Curriculum but also to hold a wide variety of activities to celebrate our school’s 30th anniversary.  We started with the launching ceremony on 1st September 2008 and this was followed by the Annual Speech Day cum parade, the annual Athletic Meet, our Open Day and finally the Variety Show.  All these could not have been held so successfully, without the concerted efforts of our teachers, students, parents, alumni and staff.  Our students gained valuable experience through their participation in the celebrations.  These events also testified to the fact that our students have great talents and potential in a wide variety of fields.

The alumni manager and the independent manager were successfully appointed to the IMC in the year under review.  Our thanks go to all IMC managers who worked together throughout the year to ensure the betterment of the school. We would like to show our gratitude to our sponsoring body, the Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club, which has committed to a HK$50,000 annual donation to establish the Study Tour Fund for teachers and students who need financial assistance to undertake study tours.

Our students’ language education, namely biliteracy and tri-lingualism, was still a major priority.  More split class teaching in English lessons was carried out.  90% of the government’s Capacity Enhancement Grant was used to enhance our students’ language proficiency in 2008-2009.

The NSS curriculum has started for Secondary 4 in this academic year 2009-2010.  By considering the existing staffing, students’ interests and the university entrance requirements, ten elective subjects will be offered.  Two extended modules M1 and M2 will be provided in the Mathematics curriculum.  Students can choose from a wide range of different combinations of subjects in the Arts, Science or Commercial streams.  As reported, a total of 77 different subject combinations was offered in Secondary 4 this year.

This year, through school assemblies, special outings and study tours, V2 voluntary work, Life-wide Learning Day activities, internal and external competitions, we have strengthened students’ national identity with our motherland and enhanced students’ awareness of the challenges facing Hong Kong today.  We have also promoted high moral values and a strong sense of responsibility.

Under the co-ordination of our school advisor Mrs. WONG, we have better links with external organizations. The Ming Yue Elder Academy continued to provide quality programmes to the elderly in the Eastern District.  These include English classes and a series of medical talks on health.  They were highly welcomed and appreciated by the elderly citizens.

In academic and non-academic fields many of our students continued to achieve excellence.  Their perseverance and our teachers’ efforts are highly appreciated.  Two of our F.6 students have been admitted to the University of Hong Kong through the Early Admission Scheme.  192 Form 5 students sat for the 2009 HKCE Examination.  Of the 17 subjects taken, the Average Subject Pass Rate was 96%.  61 Form 7 students sat for the 2009 HKAL Examination.  Of the 13 subjects taken, eleven of them achieved a 100% pass rate. The Average Subject Pass Rate was 99%.  The highest A-C Rate was achieved by Applied Mathematics and reached as high as 87%.

It has always been our belief that our students can become all-rounders. Two of our students, LEUNG Shuk Wa (F.6A) and YAN Ka Ching (F.5D) were honoured with the Ten Outstanding Youths of the Eastern District 2009 award.  Besides this, it was a bumper harvest year for our Mathematics students in terms of awards and prizes in 2008-2009. For example, our S.3A student LAI Hon Kei was one of the Hong Kong representatives participating in the 2009 International World Youth Mathematics Intercity Competition, which was held in South Africa in July 2009.  He was awarded the Bronze Award.  Other students won the third runners-up (Group Prize), two First Honour Prizes and two Second Honour Prizes (Individual prizes) in the Hong Kong Mathematical High Achievers Selection Contest 2008-2009.

Non-academic achievements in Accounting, Chinese History and Public Speaking were also plentiful in the year in review.  Our F.7A student CHONG Tsz Yan was awarded the Gold Medallion, 1st World & 1st Hong Kong at Accounting Third Level.  Our F.6A student Kwok Chi Keung won the championship in the Hong Kong Youths Public Speaking Competition.  A group of three F.4 students won the championship of the Hong Kong Secondary School Students National Education Scheme 2008 post trip presentation competition.

The school’s long tradition of community service also continued.  Our F.6A student LEUNG Shuk Wa was selected as the outstanding CYC member in the Eastern District.  The athletic and aesthetic achievements of our students were also outstanding.  Our Boys basketball team won the Boys Grade C and Overall Championships in the Inter-school Basketball Competition (Hong Kong Island Boys Division 3).  Our Boys table tennis team won the Boys Overall Championship in the Inter-school Table Tennis Competition (Hong Kong Island Boys Division 3). Our S.3C student TSE Sze Wan won the championship and our school won the keen participation prize of the e-card design competition for secondary school students for promoting awareness of the importance of organ donation among the younger generations.  In fact our students’ achievements are too numerous to mention in their entirety today.  To learn more about them, please refer to the 2008-2009 Annual Report and the Speech Day Bulletin.

Led by the President Mrs. HUI Yeung Pui Ling, the PTA held a good variety of activities for parents in the year in review. Our Parents’ Choir won the 2nd runners-up in the Open Section of the 2nd Chinese Folk Song Singing Contest organized by the Joint Committee for the Promotion of the Basic Law of Hong Kong. Our thanks also go to the parent volunteers who participated in the flag selling held by the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention, Hong Kong in February, 2009.

Headed by the chairman Ronald LAM Ching On, the Alumni Association helped organize the election of an alumni manager in September, 2008 and has already published four newsletters. They also held a wide range of activities, in the year in review, namely the 2008 Alumni Association Family and BBQ Reunion Day, the Alumni 100m Race, the 30th Anniversary Reunion Dinner, etc.

The school has just celebrated its 30th Anniversary year.  A new leaf in the school’s history is about to be turned.  The recognition shown by the public has encouraged us to move on with even bigger dreams and ambitions.  We will fulfill our potential and broaden our vision.  We will continue to care, support one another and together face the challenges ahead.  We would like to thank all who helped us achieve our educational goals.  We will definitely sustain our development and further our progress in the future.

Thank you!
