The terrible truth about time – Wong Pui Ching(3A19)

Good morning principal, teachers and fellow schoolmates! I am Samantha Wong  from 3A. Today, I am going to share with you a science book called ‘The Terrible Truth About Time’ , written by Nick Arnold. Obviously, this book talks about time. You might think that time is not very special because it passes without our notice everyday. But have you ever looked more deeply into time to find out how wonderful it is? Have you wondered about its origin and mystery? If not, you’d better read this book.

In fact, time involves not just seconds, minutes and hours, but also some of the strangest science ever. First, let me tell you an interesting fact about the speed of time. Older people always say that time flies as if the years pass faster and faster for them. It is mainly because when people get older, their brains slow down and everything that happens  seems  faster in comparison. I think this also explains why we sometimes feel that our lessons last for so long.

Second, I would like to talk about the body clock. Very often, we can get up at the time we want. It seems that our body can mark time. Many scientists believe it to be caused by the brain which seems to have a built-in time sense. Our brain does important jobs like controlling body temperature, feeling hungry and sleeping on a roughly 24-hour cycle so as to make us know when to eat something or when to go to bed. As a result, our body is at its best in the late afternoon and early evening when our temperature rises and our muscles are at their strongest. In contrast, our body is at its weakest in the early hours of the morning: heart attacks and death are more likely at this time.

There are still a lot of interesting topics in this book such as crazy clocks, time travel, and spaced-out  space-time. If you’re really interested in the study of time, this book will surely be an ‘‘accessible” guide for you. On the one hand, it uses clear explanations and attractive cartoons to introduce the ideas. On the other hand, and more important, you can find this book very easily in public libraries. That’s all for my book sharing today. Thank you.
