1) Industrial Revolution, 2) Weather and Climate – Bahirwani Sony Vashdev(2B01), Chan Mei Yan(2D03)
| Kelly | Good morning everyone, I am Kelly Chan from 2D. |
| Sony | Good morning everyone, I am Sony from 2B.We would like to introduce two books that suit the IH students today. I will introduce the first book “Industrial Revolution” written by James A Corrick. |
| Kelly | I will introduce a book called “Weather and Climate” written by Barbara Taylor. Sony, many people think that reading history books is rather boring. What made this book so interesting to you? |
| Sony | After finishing this book, I learnt more about the Industrial Revolution. This book mentions its birth in Britain, how it spread to other European countries as well as its effects on the society. What impresses me most is the detailed account of the machines used for various areas of industrial development. |
| Kelly | I learned in the IH lessons that there were many advanced inventions at that time. Does the book also introduce any of them? |
| Sony | As for me, I love those advancements in transport. Wagons for transporting coal in the mining areas were used in the 17th century and were often associated with canal or river systems for the same purpose. These were all horse-drawn while some relied on gravity, with a stationary steam engine to haul the wagons back to the top of the incline. Steam-hauled public railways began with the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825 and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830. Construction of major railways connecting the larger cities and towns followed suit.In the following century, railways helped Britain’s trade enormously, providing a quick and easy way of transport. How about your book “Weather and Climate”? |
| Kelly | This book employs an interesting approach to introduce the weather and climate. Don’t forget that they are part of our living. We ought to know more about them. |
| Sony | Wow…can you tell me more about this book? |
| Kelly | This book starts with a simple explanation of weather. The air, or atmosphere, around us behaves in different ways. It changes when it’s hot or cold, and when it’s wet or dry. It acts differently when it’s calm or stormy, and clear or cloudy. The atmosphere reacts to everything from rain to sunshine. |
| Sony | By the way, what’s the difference between climate and weather? |
| Kelly | Climate is the average weather in a location over a long period of time. Climate is useful for weather forecasting. It also helps determine when the best time it would be for farmers to plant their crops. It could even be helpful for you and your family to plan a vacation. Weather refers to the air conditions in the lower part of the atmosphere over a short period of time. Weather conditions change constantly. |
| Sony | To forecast the weather, people keep weather diaries, used sundials, built rain detectors, go cloud watching and make ice sculptures and other weather instruments. |
| Kelly | Right. A sundial is a device that measures time by the position of the sun. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow edges progressively and aligns with different hour-lines on the plate. It is the way to tell the correct time. |
| Sony | Great! Kelly, can you tell me the stories about rain detectors, cloud watching and ice sculptures? |
| Kelly | Sorry, Sony, I have to go now. Here is the book and why don’t you read it yourself? |
| Sony | With the interesting content and clear framework, “The Industrial Revolution” and “Weather and Climate” are surely the first priority to all knowledge seekers. I strongly recommend these books to all of you. This is the end of our book sharing. Thank you. |
