Principal’s Report at the 30th Anniversary Speech Day – 12/12/2008

  PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mr. WONG Ming Hau

Guest of Honour Mr. SUEN, GBS, JP, Mrs. SUEN, Supervisor Mrs. LAU, School Managers, Distinguished Guests, Parents, Teachers and Students,

This year represents a major milestone in our school’s history: it is our school’s 30th Anniversary and wonderful celebrations lay ahead for us.  It is a great honour to have Mr. SUEN as our Guest of Honour, and a great pleasure to have your presence at this special occasion.

There was a transitional change from our SMC to IMC in the year 2007-2008.  We must thank the SMC for their endless support throughout the past thirty years. Thanks also go to the Chairlady of the Education Committee of the HKCWC, Mrs. Judy Ho, who started from the preparation of the draft constitution of the IMC, and followed by the actions of sponsoring body managers, teachers, parents and alumni. With the help of different working parties, the IMC was finally established on the 1st April, 2008.

In order to relieve the workload of teachers, we have employed an administrative officer in 2007-2008.  Besides taking up some of the non-teaching duties of class teachers, our administrative officer, Mr. LI, has developed the intranet CWC computer system for printing reports and handling most of the routine administrative work.

The school’s Education Theme for the year 2007-2008 was ‘Harmony, Progress and Self-improvement’. The school has made great efforts in putting the theme into practice. Through school assembly talks and participation in activities related to the 2008 Olympic Games, our students learnt a lot about moral and civic values.  The Students’ Association showed much concern following the disasters which afflicted our motherland in 2008.  They organized two fund raising activities to support snowstorm relief work in China and provide care for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. We have also expressed our deep condolences for the many lost lives and a special class assembly about life education was held on 19th May, 2008.

The talents of our students were well demonstrated in the interflow activities, which included “Humanities Day” and the interflow concert with Sabah Tshung Tsin secondary school from Malaysia. The school has promoted and enriched students’ other learning experiences outside the territory.  With the financial support of the Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club, parents and alumni, 43 school band members participated in the Beijing International Band Festival 2008 in July.  This was a great opportunity to broaden their musical horizons and develop their sense of national identity.

It was also a very productive year for our school and its links with external organizations.  Our school and H.K.Y.W.C.A. Ming Yue District Elderly Community Centre established the first elder academy in the Eastern District, the Ming Yue Elder Academy in October, 2007.  The academy promotes life-long learning for senior citizens and provides a voluntary service and other learning experiences (OLE) for our students.  A wide range of courses were operated and they were welcomed and appreciated by the elderly citizens of the district.

Many of our students excelled in the academic and non-academic fields.  Their perseverance and our teachers’ efforts are highly appreciated.  Two of our F.6 students have been admitted to university through the Early Admission Scheme.  We achieved a 100% pass rate simultaneously in the two core subjects, English and Mathematics, of the CE and AL examinations. 189 Form 5 students sat for the 2008 HKCE Examination. Of the 17 subjects taken, the Average Subject Pass Rate was 96.6% and the highest A-C Rate was again achieved by Additional Mathematics and reached 79.5%.  63 Form 7 students sat for the 2008 HKAL Examination.  Of the 13 subjects taken, the Average Subject Pass Rate was 98.1%.  The highest A-C Rate was achieved by Physics, at 72.4%.

Astonishingly enough, our achievements have not only been limited to planet Earth. We have even left our mark in space. The minor planet 23165 was renamed “kakinchan” by the International Astronomical Union in November, 2007 because of the brilliant and innovative invention created by our former F.7S student CHAN Ka Kin.  CHAN became the pride of our school and of Hong Kong.

Non-academic achievements in Mathematics and Principles of Accounts were also plentiful in 2007-2008.  Most of our high mathematics achievers are junior form students.  LAI Hon Kei, our S2 student, won the First Honour Prize in the Hong Kong Mathematical High Achievers Selection Contest 2007-2008.  He was also selected to be one of the participants representing Hong Kong in the “2008 Invitational World Youth Mathematics Intercity Competition”. Two F.7A students won the Champion of the Accounting Case Competition 2007-2008.  Three F.5C students won the World and Country Gold Medallion in April, 2008.

The school’s long tradition of service to others continued and students were encouraged to participate in school and community service.  Our F.6A student TANG Wun Kwan was selected as the outstanding CYC member in the Eastern District. The physical and aesthetic achievements of students were outstanding in the year 2007-2008. The girls athletics team took part in various 4×100 M invitation relays and won four championships in the year 2007-2008. Our S.2 student, Liu Man Wah, won the overall champion in the Secondary Section of the Hong Kong Flower Show 2008 Nangyang Commercial Bank Student Drawing Competition. To learn more about our other students’ achievements, please refer to the 2007-2008 Annual Report and the Speech Day Bulletin.

Led by the President of the PTA, Mr. WONG Chung Fong Paul held a good variety of activities for parents in the year in review. The Parents Choir was active in 2007-2008 and they had regular practice on alternate Saturday afternoons.

Headed by the chairman, Ronald Lam Ching On, the new twelve officials of the restructured alumni association act as valuable resources for our school community and they will organize different types of activities to gather our alumni together. We extend our gratitude to our two former Principals, Mr. SUN and Mrs. WONG, for their presence and support at the AGM.

The year 2007-2008 was so successful mainly thanks to our dedicated teachers for their tireless efforts. Moreover, a debt of gratitude is extended to our supervisor, our school advisor, Mrs. Wong, former SMC and current IMC school managers, staff and parents, who have, without fail, supported our school with their enthusiasm and hard work.

The preparation for the New Senior Secondary Curriculum will be the climax this year. Though I am, comparatively speaking, a little green as a   principal, I am up for the challenge ahead. The school has consolidated its past achievements and is developing new strengths. Under the new management of the IMC and the collaborative efforts of our staff, I believe that we can continue in our pursuit of excellence and reach for even greater heights.

Thank you!
