Principal’s Message – 4/9/2008

Good morning everyone,

This Tuesday our school social workers talked about the Olympic Games. Today, I would like to share my views on the same topic with you. The opportunity to host the Olympic Games was the fulfillment of a long held dream for the Chinese people. The Olympic Games was more than just a sporting event. “One world, one dream”, the catchphrase of the Beijing Olympics, expresses the common wish of people all over the world. On the one hand, athletes and spectators were moved by the “faster, higher, and stronger” spirit that came with competition; on the other hand, they were also inspired by its message of peace, friendship, and unity of culture.

The Chinese government has exerted great efforts to show that it has met international standards in different fields. China wants to send a message to the world that China has opened up to the world and become a strong country. Advanced technology was used to construct new stadiums and facilities, like the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube, yet they are all environmentally friendly. I believe people all over the world must have admired the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. It was grand and fantastic. We are proud of being Chinese. But do you know most of the effects had been prepared at least one year ahead of the event? For example, the way in which the fireworks showed the five rings logo, the movement of the paper, the production of the Chinese character and so on. I want you to learn from the endurance of the actors, the creativity of the designers and the perseverance of the directors. The team leaders and members did not give up when they encountered difficulties. They tried their best to solve the problems. They only aimed at success in the Beijing Olympics. I hope you all can learn from their attitude. Try to apply your creativity and problem solving skills in preparing the celebration programmes of our school’s 30th anniversary. For example, have you thought of grouping one thousand students to make a 30th anniversary logo in the open playground? As a start, we have already done the beautiful painting on the lockers.

Last but not least, the Legislative Council election will be held this Sunday. It is not only a matter for your parents. Though most of you are not eligible for polling, you should read some notes about the policies of the candidates involved, at least those from Hong Kong Island. Try to understand their viewpoints, their ways of thinking and arguments. You are the new generation and you should show concern for the community. That’s what I’d like to share with you today.

Thank you.
