“The 20th Century Design” – Young Chiu Yin(2A) and Au Nga Ying(2A)

Natalie : Hi, Jenny!
Jenny : Hi, Natalie.
Natalie : What are you doing here? You look so worried. Tell me if I can help you.
Jenny : My teacher asked me to do a project about plastic, but it is nothing special. There’re plastic products all around us! What should I write?
Natalie : I think this book is suitable for you. It’s about plastic.
Jenny : Oh really? What’s it about?
Natalie : The book is called ‘The 60s – The Plastic Age’, from “The 20th Century Design” series. It is written by Julia Bigham. And it is about different new designs and technologies used by people in the 60s. One of the most important technologies developed in those years was using plastic, which became popular.
Jenny : That’s why the 1960s was called “The Plastic Age” as what the book is named. The book sounds great! Can you tell me more about it?
Natalie : Sure! The way to produce plastic is also introduced. Plastic is made of petrochemical. The production proesss takes place in a large and hot reactor, at about 200oC.
Jenny : After that, the manufacturer has to melt the plastic again at that high temperature, in order to form different shapes in moulds.
Natalie : Absolutely. The book also shows some interesting pictures of the plastic products in the past. Look at this one! It’s the first on-piece plastic chair made by Verner Panto. It has no arms and its shape it quite funny!
Jenny : Oh! The inflated chair and sofa produced by the Italian firm is alos quite interesting! How clever those designers are. I really admire them as they would use the magical plastic material to make these great inventions.
Natalie : I agree. Humans always have incredible ideas over centuries. This book could surely help(s) ou a lot with the project.
Jenny : Yes, this really is a good book. Does it tell us any great designs and new techologies in other fields, such as fashion, building and transportation?
Natalie : Yes.
Jenny : I see. By the way, where did you get it from?
Natalie : I got it from the D&T room. You may also find it in the public library.
Jenny : Thanks for your help! I think my project will be successfully done soon.
Natalie : You’re welcome!
